If you are coming from another language, especially one that uses constructors, it may appear that new should be all you need, but Go is not those languages, nor does it have constructors. Would no longer be possible, requiring more special cases in the grammar to permit *new(byte, length). new always returns a *T for the T passed to it.Again more special cases to have to remember, whereas before new took exactly one argument, the type. For slices and channels, new would have to become variadic, taking a possible length, buffer size, or capacity, as required. This is a rule that every Go programmer would have to remember. new would have special behaviour if the type passed to new was a slice, map or channel.Yes, new could be extended to operate like make for slices, maps and channels, but that would introduce its own inconsistencies. s := new(string)įmt.Println(*c = nil) // true Sure, but these are just rules, we can change them, right ?įor the confusion they may cause, make and new are consistent make only makes slices, maps, and channels, new only returns pointers to initialised memory. Using new to construct a pointer to a slice, map, or channel zero value works today and is consistent with the behaviour of new. ![]() New(T) always returns a *T pointing to an initialised T. As Go doesn’t have constructors, the value will be initialised to T‘s zero value. ![]() Why can’t we use new for everything ?Īlthough the use of new is rare, its behaviour is well specified. X1 and x2 have the same type, *int, x2 points to initialised memory and may be safely dereferenced, the same is not true for x1. ![]() If new was removed in favour make, how would you construct a pointer to an initialised value ? var x1 *int Go does not have user defined generic types, but it does have several built in types that can operate as generic lists, maps, sets, and queues slices, maps and channels.īecause make is designed to create these three built in generic types, it must be provided by the runtime as there is no way to express the function signature of make directly in Go.Īlthough make creates generic slice, map, and channel values, they are still just regular values make does not return pointer values. On the surface it appears that make and new do very similar things, so what is the rationale for having both ? Why can’t we use make for everything ? It is fair that commenters point out this redundancy in the language and this sometimes leads them to search for other inconsistencies, most notably the redundancy between make and new. Among them is the ability to take the address of a struct literal which leads to serveral ways to do the same thing. Created by rileyjshaw. This is a post about Go’s built in make and new functions.Īs Rob Pike noted at Gophercon this year, Go has many ways of initialising variables.
![]() Now, once the editor takes over, they go through and they create the screencast. He emphasizes towards the end that he encourages all of us to make changes that start with ourselves first. Although it would take effort from millions of people. And it certainly didn’t on his life on earth. Sadly, I feel he realized that this most likely would not occur. Michael realized and revealed that if everyone stopped worrying about themselves and greed, that the world could change on its own. This song is meant to be inspiring and thoughtful. This is certainly one of the several reasons why the world fell in love with him. He really makes audiences interested in unveiling his truths and beliefs. Michaels thoughts are quite complex and beautiful. We must have the ability to help ourselves and then go onto helping others. For instance, if you see someone in the street that has no food, you cannot feed them if you also have food. Michael is showing us that we must be fully well before we can do much for someone else. Michael claims: “I’m starting with the man in the mirror, I’m asking him to change his ways, And no message could have been any clearer, If you want to make the world a better place, Take a look at yourself, and then make a change.” Change within oneself must first be done before actual changes can occur. This lyric is very key in understanding these hidden messages. And he realizes the change starts with him. He then realizes that if no one else is changing these situations, that he should. Without emphasizing this word, we wouldn’t understand how internalized it is.Įven though Michael does nothing in the video in the beginning. He almost forces listeners to look deeply into themselves and think about these rough situations occurring in our world today. He’s literally standing in the mirror looking at himself. This word, mirror, makes us realize he is proclaiming ideas that he has personally had. It certainly serves its purpose as the singer intended. So why would Michael do this? That is make this word stand out so frequently. We find ourselves even imitating this distinct pronunciation when singing along. One who is familiar with this song, can automatically hear the way Jackson says it. The most obvious in this song, would certainly be the word “mirror”. He does this to grab listener’s ears to important words. In the song, during certain segments of the song, Michael’s tone gains much enthusiasm. He sees the problems, but realizes they aren’t easy to fix, or simply cannot be fixed. This is true, because he feels guilty, if he didn’t he wouldn’t reinstate these ideas so many times. He is literally having a hard time deciding what is the proper action to take. We see that Michael realizes these bad situations, but rather than helping, he tries to just act as if he didn’t see it. And reinstated when Michael said: “could it be really me, pretending that they’re not alone?”. This is understood in the passage above when he said: “With not enough to eat, who am I to be blind? Pretending not to see their needs”. Michael is realizing how cruel the world really is, but also how cruel he is as well. It can be concluded that this is a worldwide problem not simply a territorial one. We also see these points when Michael says:” I’ve been a victim of a selfish kind of love It’s time that I realize, that there are some with no home, not a nickel to loan, could it be really me, pretending that they’re not alone?” Firstly, he brings up the topic of children in bad situations. That is if he did not change his skin and become a professional and wealthy celebrity. All the children within this music video are black, so Jackson might be thinking that he could most likely be in the same situation. He is successful, which could be partly attributed to his change of skin colors. He stated that he was adjusting his collar on his jacket, while he sees children without coats, without even food. The first of these revelations, is that Michael realizes how the world is. This quote is very powerful because understanding these initial concepts allows someone to understand deeper messages within the song. With not enough to eat, who am I to be blind? Pretending not to see their needs”. Michael says: “As I, turn up the collar on My favorite winter coat, This wind is blowing my mind I see the kids in the streets Of young children who are starving and sick, who are living in unreasonable conditions. From the very beginning of this video, we see a series of depressing images. ![]() Map view, a satellite view and a mixture of the two. The author outlines with exemplary clarity Lenin's cruelty, his illegal and brutal seizure of power, his glee in ordering executions, the institution of mass terror as a means of political control and the construction of the first camps in what later became the gulag. “Before 1914 they were marginal figures,” he writes, without “the slightest hope of entering political life.” The whirlwind of destruction that started in 1914 turned their fantasies of racial purity and class dictatorship into reality, killing people on a scale unknown in human history.Īnyone who still believes in the myth-assiduously propagated by the Soviet Union and its admirers-of the “good Lenin” will find the book uncomfortable reading. To serve even 10% of that would require 200 airships CargoLifter could build only four a year in one hangar. The cost of carrying a load (up to 160 tonnes, at 50 mph) should also be low compared with planes or lorries.ĭoes enough demand exist? The global market for big loads is around 30m tonnes a year. But once the CL-160 is airborne, the cost of building extra ships should be low. The cost of development is euro590m ($505m), says Carl von Gablenz, CargoLifter's chief executive. ![]() The idea is to carry not people, but cargo: heavy loads, such as turbines, or bulky ones, such as segments of oil refineries. CargoLifter's plans, however, are the most monumental. Several companies are convinced that airships are ripe for a comeback, including the venerable Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik, whose new craft recently won clearance to carry passengers, a dozen at a time. This is the hangar out of which CargoLifter's CL-160 will emerge in 2003. The time-warp feeling ends when a gigantic space-age dome, 360 metres long and 107 metres high, comes into view. And the business of the airfield's new owner, CargoLifter, is the development of giant airships, a means of transport few have taken seriously since the Hindenburg went up in flames in 1937.
